If you want a relaxing getaway that you and your loved ones will truly enjoy, nothing beats going to the Balearic Islands and spending your holidays in Majorca and Menorca. These two islands are the most popular destinations of people going for their getaway in the Balearics. The Menorca is undoubtedly a perfect place for people looking for a relaxing getaway that is far from the stressful life in the city. One of the best places to visit when you go to Menorca is the town of Ciutadella.

Situated on the west coast of Menorca, Ciutadella is a stylish place to visit that is well known for sumptuous fish restaurants serving the local catch of the day. Ciutadella was the former capital of the island and an historic town that has held up well to the pressure of tourism in the twentieth century. Ciutadella Considerd as one of Spains most attractive cities. Great shopping town with its many narrow streets with hidden sights, shops and cafe treats.

Ciutadella was originally named by the Carthagians, who called it Jamma, and was the original capital of Menorca until the British came along and moved it to Mahon in the eighteenth century. But Ciutadella still remains the religious capital of Menorca. Ciutadella gets its name from 'Citadel' -a fortified city. Allthough most the defensive walls were knocked down to expand the city you can still see remnents of them today- most notabley the walls above the harbour under Placa des Born. It is also host to the island's largest and most popular festival

Ciutadella

Ciutadella is the second largest on the island with a population of 24,000 people. Historic and charming town, Ciutadella the capital of western Menorca is known for its palaces, famous festivals, and its gothic cathedral and historic trading port. In the vicinity are a number of picturesque white sandy coves with cool turquoise waters
and some very interesting archaeological sites. The long narrow inlet which forms the harbour of Ciutadella was once an important trading port. Today it is filled with yaughts easily outnumbering the few remaining fishing boats

The San Juan fiestas held in Ciutadella (23rd and 24th June) are famous throughout Menorca island and Spain. They are more than 600 years old and include a procession to 'la Ermita del Santo' (a small chapel). One
of the fiesta's main events is a procession carrying a red flag with the blue cross of Malta on it. There are other fiestas on 17th of January, Fiestas San Antonio Abad, whose origin lies in the reconquest of the Ciutadella town
As with Malta weather in Menorca during the summer season is generally dry with a cooling breeze.
Spring time ( late March to April ) is a wonderful time to visit the island. Before the heat of the summer lies across the island, the air is lighter, the views sharper as if the winter has "cleaned the air" and of course the spring colours make the landscape so much much more vivid ..
